Location – The Cornelius Veterans Monument is to be located on Main Street in
Cornelius, North Carolina. See site map below:
Materials – The monument will be maintained by the Town of Cornelius and the
material used for construction should be durable with minimal maintenance
required. All submissions must be fully compliant with the American with
Disabilities Act (ADA).
Monument benches to be sold to public sponsors will be included in the overall
design of the project.
The names and dates of service of about 600 veterans initially and space for
another 600 for future inclusion on the monument will be included. The five
seals of the armed forces of the United States (army, navy, marines, air force
and coast guard), and the seal of the U.S. Merchant Marine during WWII, shall be
prominently displayed in the design.
Signage which is visible from both directions on Main Street must be included.
Somewhere on the monument, prominent recognition should be given to Jerry Crump
a Congressional Medal of Honor winner from Cornelius who distinguished himself
in Korea with acts of bravery far above and beyond the call of duty.
A flagpole with yardarm for 3 flags shall be included in the design with
effective lighting to illuminate the American Flag at night since it will be
flown 24 hours per day.
